December 28, 2009 – The New York TimesHelping Youths Who Struggle With Identity: “Vidari DeGuzman was a New York City teenager searching for acceptance when he first came to the Hetrick-Martin Institute, a service organization for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youths. Now 24 and with reassignment surgery behind him, he is a youth worker at the institute, located in the East Village.”   More button
December 18, 2009 – The Oakland Tribune: The City of Alameda, CA, recently considered an anti-bullying policy which would require elementary schools to teach, among other things, about gender and sexual orientation.  A “Letter to the Editor” soon appeared opposing the inclusion of a “mental illness” (GID) as a natural condition.  This drew a response from the parents of a transgender child, refuting the position of the earlier writer.  The curriculum in question is to be implemented in the fall of 2010. 
December 15, 2009 – The New York Times: New York Gov. David A. Paterson is preparing to issue an executive order that would include transgender people in antidiscrimination policies that govern state agencies.   More button

Andrew SolomonOctober 22, 2009 – Andrew Solomon, author of “The Noonday Demon – An Atlas of Depression,” spoke at the Let’s Breakthrough Together 2009, at the Harvard Club in NYC. Solomon spoke on the families of transgender youth and the hardships many face as they come of age. Andrew is also on the board of Trans Youth Family Allies, a great non profit organization that empowers and gives support to children and families in which gender may be expressed and respected.” (Video included)  More button
October 29, 2009  -BBC News: Doctors in Britain are reviewing guidelines for the treatment of people under 18 with gender dysphoria. A key issue is the age at which young people can be prescribed drugs which pause puberty.  More button

October 27, 2009 – The Flat Hat: Transgender-Identified Student Jessee Vasold Elected Homecoming Queen at the College of William and Mary. The election demonstrates a rejection of the “gender/sex binary” view.  More button 
Hate Crimes Bill Passes:
Historic First Federal Protections of Transgender People
October 22, 2009, Washington, DC In an historic move, the United States Senate, by a vote of 68 to 29, joined the House of Representatives in passing The Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, which will be the first federal law to include gender identity and transgender people. Once signed by the President, this law will add sexual orientation, gender identity, gender and disability to the categories included in existing federal hate crimes law and will allow local governments who are unable or unwilling to address hate crimes to receive assistance from the federal government. President Obama has indicated that he will sign the bill into law.

Treating transsexual kids: wait for, then delay puberty to treat
 

“The nation’s oldest and largest organization of endocrinologists has recommended that physicians treating children with gender identity disorder intervene to delay puberty at its first signs and wait until a child is at least 16 before offering hormonal therapy that would begin his or her gender transition.”  More button

Jazz’ parents agreed to do this segment to demonstrate that their daughter is being allowed nothing more than to be herself.  More button

August 19, 2009 - Since August 15, airline passengers on all domestic flights are required to provide identifying information, which now includes gender, at the time of booking of the flight. NCTE has issued a document to provide guidelines for transgender passengers, which will also be helpful to parents traveling with trans teens.    More button

July 17, 2009 – Anaheim, CA Trans Episcopal: For the first time in its history, the Episcopal Church has taken official actions in support of transgender civil rights and inclusion at its 76th General Convention. More button
July 18, 2009 – Bay Windows (New England): Women’s and children’s groups rebut ’bathroom bill’ rhetoric: But let me also address the relationship of this bill to the terrible scourge of child sexual abuse.
