TRANSYOUTH FAMILY ALLIES EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR HONORED AT EQUALITY
ARIZONA AWARD DINNER
PHOENIX, AZ, June 13, 2009 - TransYouth Family Allies (TYFA), a
national organization empowering transgender and gender variant
children and their families, today announced that TYFA Co-Founder and
Executive Director, Kim Pearson, was honored at the recent 18th Annual
Equality Arizona Awards Dinner by being named the Northern Arizona
Activist of the Year.
The Awards dinner is an annual event of Equality Arizona, a civil
rights organization that works to secure, protect, and defend the
rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons in Arizona.
The dinner's over 650 attendees enjoyed an evening of notable speakers
in addition to the awards presentation. Activist award honorees were
nominated by community members and final decisions were made by the
Arizona Equality Board. Regarding the award, Barbara
McCullough-Jones, Executive Director of Equality Arizona, made the
following statement:
"Equality Arizona is proud to give Kim Pearson from TransYouth Family
Allies an award at this year's dinner. Kim's groundbreaking work has
helped so many people understand and celebrate the diversity within
their families. We are pleased to have TYFA as an ally in our pursuit
of equality in Arizona."
Kim Pearson's interest in activism in support of transgender and
gender variant children and their families began with her own
experiences of supporting her own transgender son. She co-founded
TYFA in 2006, the first and only national organization that supports
educates and advocates exclusively for gender variant and transgender
children. Kim Pearson's activism takes the form of working directly
with families, to providing educational trainings for GLBT
organizations, school personnel, professional and government
organizations, to being interviewed on local and national radio and
television programs. As executive director of TYFA Kim Pearson
coordinates the direction and scope of this national organization so
that transgender and gender variant children throughout the country
are understood and respected. Through Kim Pearson's leadership, TYFA
has served hundreds of families and reached countless others through
educational events.
Pearson states, "I am very honored by the award, but the best
recognition still comes from the kids...their thanks and hugs mean
everything to me."
